Bollywood dances to the beats of tollywood with the slew of remakes

For the past few years, Bollywood is experiencing the worst face in terms of own movies. Apart from small movies like URI, Raazi, Andhadun, many most awaited movie of the years were wiped out completely in front of the box office. Big production houses like Dharma Productions made huge disasters like Kalank, SOYT2. Even Khan trio(Sharukh - Salman - Amir) failed in bringing Hindi films glory back. To make the condition even worse worldwide sensation Baahubali smashed every record ever throughout the country. People started rewriting records as NON-Baahubali records. So Bollywood makers found a solution to fill this dry spell. That is remaking the South Indian movie scripts especially Tollywood scripts.
In the last 10 years, data from film trade websites shows that Bollywood has remade 38 south Indian films, 18 of which have been hits. According to many film critics, south Indian cinema has perfected the art of making commercially viable mainstream entertainers with drama and emotions, a formula Bollywood is yet to get right, especially lately, as the failure of big-ticket films such as Thugs of Hindostan and Kalank shows. Most south Indian language films, especially those in Tamil and Telugu, know how to appeal to the lowest common denominator without losing the sense of the plot. From 2016 Tollywood took a U-turn from making commercial mass masala movies to story-driven different concepts which were a huge success in terms of both critics and box office.
Apart from Baahubali which made tons of money, other Telugu movie like Rangasthalam, Khaidi No.150, Maharshi collected 100 crores. Every year about 6-7 movies are making more than double the pre-release business and here the trade analysis work on Share figure which is 50-65% of Net Figure which was followed by Bollywood trade analyst. That to this whole collections are just from 2 Telugu states whereas Bollywood Net figure will be collected from the entire country. So if we compare both industries, Tollywood movies are making much more money than Bollywood movies. This shows the strength of Telugu scripts and why Bollywood is going after them.
This remake thing is very common for Bollywood, every year one or two movies were remade and made a decent amount of money for makers. It's a normal thing in Bollywood for remaking a movie because you are telling the same story to a large scale of audience. Sallu Bhai alone did about 12 remakes and got hits from them. But now the real problem is Hindi audience is not accepting those melodramatic movies from their makers. On the other hand, after Baahubali those audiences started looking south movies(thanks to the online movie streaming services Netflix & Prime). This made Hindi makers adopt more south movies especially Telugu films. Let me show you the box office stats of those remake movies.
Recent sensation Kabir Singh also reached 100 crore club in just 5 days and not going to stop any time soon. The irony is now they are bringing Tollywood directors for making those movies. Sandeep Reddy Vanga directed both original and the remake of Arjun Reddy. There are also upcoming remakes like Jersey, RX100. This shows how much Bollywood is depending on Telugu scripts. It's a good thing for remaking in large scale but if they keep on doing this, the audience won't accept their movies at all in the future. Instead of blindly remaking south scripts Hindi makers should start working on their own movies and gain the trust of the audience back.
